Robert is an Australian living in L.A. He began his career in radio and media in Melbourne, and has been Hollywood-side for a number of years working on tender and insightful documentaries on figures who inspire him. Last year, he won the Burbank Film Festival Award for Best Documentary (a great homage to the legend that is Tarzan - Tarzan Revisited ), and is currently in the midst of graciously honoring Leonard Cohen, a man he admires deeply, in a documentary to be released in 2020. We spoke to Robert in L.A.'s Silver Lake neighborhood.
What brought you to LA?
I met Leonard Cohen nearly 20 years ago here in LA when I was developing a documentary on him. Most of my films have been about Hollywood history or rock music, so over the last 6/7 years I was trying to organize my life to move to Los Angeles, a place I always loved. I've been very fortunate and I now work for the Leonard Cohen Estate on a large archive project. Bob Dylan has a line: "this place ain't doing me any good / I'm in the wrong town I should be in Hollywood" and that's exactly how I felt when I was living in Melbourne.
What is the biggest misconception about you?
I think I'm pretty much an open book, and I try my best to be just like I am.

If you weren't a documentarian & filmmaker, what would you be doing?
I can't imagine doing anything else except being a filmmaker at this point. Next life I'll be a musician!
What gives you hope?
Listening to Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Also, the people I love.
What was the last show you binge watched?
The Affair on Showtime which I loved. Still watching Season 5.
Who do you look up to in the industry?
The work of many, many artists, directors and musicians inspire me. I don't want to name names!
What is something people don't know about you, but you wish they did?
I don't have any secrets from the people I'm close to. (But Robert, WE want to know your secrets!)
What can people expect from you in 2020?
Ummm, more work on the Leonard Cohen project (some very exciting developments there). Also another documentary film I'm currently working on, on Ida Lupino. Maybe some voiceover work!
